Dune’s Ornithopter Vehicle Gets an Official LEGO Set

Arrakis. Dune. LEGO set. For fans who had a vision that the epic world of Frank Herbert might some day be brick-buildable, the prophecy has come to pass.

Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation of the iconic series comes to LEGO for the House Atreides Royal Ornithopter. These dragonfly-like vehicles hover above the wild sands of the planet Dune, monitoring spice mining and performing transportation and rescue operations.

Suitable for a Duke

As the Ornithopter is part of LEGO’s icons series, it’s not yet clear if this is just a one-off or part of a new licensed sub-line for the movie(s). The sheer selection of minifigs it comes with, though, suggests the designers knew they had one shot and tried to get everyone in there. This includes a floating Baron Harkonnen, who has no scenes with this particular vehicle. The other included characters: Paul Atreides, Lady Jessica, Gurney Halleck, Chani, Leto Atreides, Liet Kynes, and Duncan Idaho. Action features include functional landing gear and flapping wings that fold out.

Made from 1369 pieces, the finished build stands nine inches tall, 22 inches long, and 31 inches wide with wings fully extended. That’s a fair bit of shelf or table space, so prepare appropriately. You have until February 1, but can preorder the set now for a surprisingly reasonable (for LEGO) $164.99. The advanced build designed for adults includes digital instructions for the LEGO Builder app.

Should this set do well, and licensors feel happy, there’s a wealth of further possible Dune material to work with. Anyone feeling patient enough to build a giant sandworm? Take a look at all the official images below, and see for yourself if Dune LEGO is right for you.

Barring any further SAG strike delays, Dune: Part Two opens in theaters March 15, 2024.
