While impressive, Diamond Select‘s Tron action figures never quite caught on well enough to justify a second wave. However, for the summer convention season, Diamond found a way to make that first wave feel new again. Ironically, by making it “old” — a translucent redeco mimics the original 3-3/4-inch action figures that came out in 1982 to support the movie.
San Diego Comic-Con remains virtual this summer, making Tron figures something of a perfect match. And enabling anyone who stays at home to obtain them. Gentle Giant’s website currently accepts preorders for this $80 set of Sark, Flynn, and Tron.

Unlike the original 1982 toys, these figures feature the authentic likenesses of David Warner, Bruce Boxleitner, and Jeff Bridges. And the linework details shine under blacklight. Tron’s purple plastic may be mildly off movie model, but the red and blue colors on Sark and Flynn look the right shades, even though the onscreen characters did not appear transparent.
From the official announcement, “Each comes packaged on a retro-styled blister card, and all three come packaged in a full-color window box. Limited to only 3,000 pieces! Designed by Yuri Tming, sculpted by Gentle Giant Studios!”
