AVP & Spider-Man 2 Box Office Update

20th Century Fox’s Alien vs. Predator took over the top spot at the box office with an impressive $38.3 million from 3,395 theaters. The monster match-up has allowed the studio to become the first to have six consecutive films gross over $20 million during their debut weekens.

In the tenth spot, Spider-Man 2 spun $3.4 million over the weekend to give the sequel a total of $360.9 million after seven weeks. The film has passed up Jurassic Park ($357.1 million) to climb to the ninth spot on the all-time domestic blockbuster list.

Newsweek.com’s first movie-themed readers’ survey, launched a week ago, collected more than 6,500 opinions. The best movie of the summer, with 28 percent of the vote, was “Spiderman 2.” The rest of the top five: “Fahrenheit 9/11” (20%); “Shrek 2” (10%); and the last two spots tied with eight percent of the vote, are “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azbakan” and “The Bourne Supremacy.”

The worst movies of the summer, according to the survey, were: “Catwoman” (27%); “Fahrenheit 9/11” (16%); “White Chicks” (15%); “The Chronicles of Riddick” (5%) and “Van Helsing” (4%).
