Reuters says that Spider-Man 2 has already earned $43 million overseas. Added to the domestic total so far of $180.1 million makes for a worldwide tally of $223.1 million
“Shrek 2” and “Spider-Man 2” brought their own record-breaking fireworks to the foreign box office over the weekend.
The DreamWorks cartoon fetched an astounding $76.7 million from 28 countries, while Sony’s superhero recorded new industry marks by corralling a mighty $43 million from 28 markets, in its first wave of overseas openings.
“Spider-Man 2” and “Shrek 2” did not collide in new openings, but the comic book hero bested the animated ogre in holdover markets where the DreamWorks film had held the No. 1 post for at least three weeks — in Australia, Korea and Taiwan, for example.
“Spider-Man 2” posted the biggest all-time industry openings in 12 territories and mostly opened bigger than the original film.
