Box Office Mojo reports that on Saturday “Shrek 2” beat Spider-Man‘s single-day record of $43.6 million. The green ogre is said to have earned $44.3 million for the day and a big $125.2 million in its first five days (full stats here).
Spider-Man‘s opening day record of $39.4 million still stands, of course, and it’s three-day opening weekend total of $114.8 million does as well. “Shrek 2” earned $104.3 million for the Friday-to-Sunday frame.
“Shrek 2” opened in a record wide 4,163 theaters, while Spider-Man opened in 3,615 theaters. We’re expecting Sony Pictures will be targeting an even wider release for Spider-Man 2 than the amount of theaters “Shrek 2” is playing in.
