Weekend Watch – San Diego Comic-Con 2019’s Best Panels

Welcome to Weekend Watch, a recurring feature where we highlight some of the best geek-related videos around the web. Whether it’s short films, behind-the-scenes clips, video essays, or top 10 countdowns, the only requirement is that they are about our favorite geeky topics!

In this edition of Weekend Watch, we’re highlighting some of the best panels from San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Starting things off, we have full panels for Terminator: Dark Fate and the 20th anniversary of Batman Beyond. After that, we have videos that focus on the making of Avengers: Endgame with the film’s writers and directors. After that, we move on to the main course – Marvel Studios’ full reveal of their Phase Four slate of films. Finally, we’ll close things out with a video of the Rick and Morty season 4 Panel from the con.

Terminator: Dark Fate Panel

Up first, we have a video from Variety that captures the panel for Terminator: Dark Fate. Moderated by Grae Drake, the panel features appearances by Tim Miller, Mackenzie Davis, Gabriel Luna, Natalia Reyes, and Diego Boneta. Most importantly, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton make an appearance in Hall H together for the first time. While this is Hamilton’s first time gracing the stage, it also publicly reunites the duo for the first time in decades. During the Q&A, the cast discusses the pressure of making a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Batman Beyond 20th Anniversary Panel

Next, the first of three videos from Films That Rock features the full panel for Batman Beyond’s 20th anniversary. Celebrating the groundbreaking animated series, the panel features many of the creative team behind the series. Starting with producers Bruce Timm and Glen Murakami, the panel also includes casting/dialogue director Andrea Romano, director James Tucker, as well as writers Bob Goodman and Stan Berkowitz. Finally, Kevin Conroy and Will Friedle– the voices of Batman and Terry McGinnis, respectively – also make appearances. This fascinating Q&A covers the origins of the milestone series, the innovative designs, the excellent voice acting, and much more.

Writing Avengers: Endgame

This panel, which also comes via Films That Rock, highlights Avengers: Endgame’s writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Hosted by Backstory Magazine’s editor-in-chief Jeff Goldsmith, the trio breaks down the writing process on such a massive film. Including Avengers: Infinity War, the panel digs into what it took to plot, write, rewrite, and the back-to-back productions. Although this panel is more geared toward the nuts and bolts of the screenwriting process, this panel provides some fascinating storytelling insights. If you’re looking to listen to the audio version of this panel, you can find it on Goldsmith’s podcast, The Q&A.

A Conversation With The Russo Brothers

Our next panel, of course from Films That Rock, features Joe and Anthony Russo discussing their work, namely Avengers: Endgame. Moderated by Collider’s editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub, the discussion features a variety of topics regarding the making of the film. In addition, the panel also features “fan questions” from the various members of the film’s cast. Although their epic, four-film run with Marvel Studios is the primary focus of the panel, it also covers their future. The Russo brothers’ new company, AGBO, is also highlighted.

Marvel Studios San Diego Comic-Con 2019 Panel

Next, we have the highlight panel of the weekend – Marvel Studios’ glorious return to Hall H. Marvel Studios revealed their Phase 4 slate of films, which was well captured last weekend. There was too much information to cover in this post, but you can find our full recap here. The first video, which comes via Entertainment Tonight, features some of the best highlights of the ninety-minute panel.

The second video, hailing from Big Gold Belt Podcast, features the full Marvel Studios panel from San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Although this video is obviously the expanded version of the panel’s events, it’s still worth checking out. Most importantly, it also offers a ground-level view of the festivities in Hall H.

Rick and Morty Season 4 Panel

As a quick bonus, we have the full panel for Rick and Morty season 4 from Jon Roark Foley. While the video and audio quality of this video aren’t the best, the content of the panel itself makes up for it. Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, and Spencer Grammer were on hand to cover a variety of topics regarding the series. While spoilers for the upcoming season are naturally off-limits, there are tons of great little tidbits spread throughout. You can find the referenced season 4 clip here.
