Everything We Know About the 2016 Superhero Movies

There are just two months left in 2015, a year that for a long time now has been marked by fans as “the big one.” We saw The Avengers assemble once again, we roared down the Fury Road, we went back to Isla Nublar and all of its dino-mayhem, and we still haven’t even gone to a galaxy far, far away yet. It never changes though, no matter what spectacle we’re gifted with in any year, for some it always comes down to “Well NEXT YEAR, is going to be even better.” With that in mind, and in lieu of a traditional 2016 preview, we wanted to break down all of the superhero and sci-fi movies we’re covering here on SHH by combing through every official detail we know about them. Dive in!

Deadpool – February 12, 2016

In development since 2009, 20th Century Fox officially greenlit the long-awaited Deadpool in September of 2014 by setting a February 2016 release date for the movie. Tim Miller directs the film from a script by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Ryan Reynolds returns to star as the title character alongside T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Morena Baccarin as Copycat and Ed Skrein as Ajax. The film will also feature the mutant Colossus, though Daniel Cudmore has confirmed he will not appear as the character.

The film is officially described as follows: Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Reynolds has also expressed a desire that Hugh Jackman might cameo as Wolverine, though it remains unconfirmed as to whether or not he will actually appear. He did go on to say that the history of the characters is certainly there in the film: “They share a history that’s for sure. We talked a little about a few different things around there but nothing I can really give away.”

Production began on the film in Vancouver in March of this year, both Ryan Reynolds’ hometown and the former location of three other X-Men movies (X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

Ahead of the start of production, Reynolds revealed our first official look at the costume from the film in a parody of the infamous Burt Reynolds Cosmopolitan centerfold (pictured above).

On April Fools Day of this year, Reynolds and 20th Century Fox tricked the internet by revealing the upcoming movie would be rated PG-13 before ultimately shouting “April Fools!” and confirming the film will be rated R.

After some leaks at San Diego Comic-Con, the official trailer for Deadpool was released online on August 4 and gave us a taste of what to expect from the Merc with a Mouth’s solo film.

Finally, composer Tom Holkenborg, known to fans as Junkie XL, revealed he will be providing the score for the film.
