Origins and Evolutions: Daredevil

This Friday, April 10, the long-awaited “Daredevil” live-action series will premiere on Netflix with Charlie Cox in the title role.

The early reviews of the Daredevil series seem to indicate that Marvel got it right this time. Many fans were less-than-satisfied by Daredevil’s previous live action adventure, with Ben Affleck in the title role. Daredevil also has the unique distinction of being the only 20th Century Fox Marvel property to revert back to its owners after the rights expired. That’s unlikely to happen again with the Fantastic Four or the X-Men.

There are some who call Daredevil “Marvel’s Batman,” but that’s an oversimplification of one of Marvel’s greatest characters. Daredevil isn’t a carbon copy of DC’s Dark Knight. Daredevil has his own unique personality, powers, supporting cast, villains and history that have withstood the test of time.

Daredevil is actually one of the earliest Marvel superheroes from the Silver Age of comics. In 1964, Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett introduced readers to Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer who used his extrasensory perception and his exceptional athletic skills to clean up the mean streets of Hell’s Kitchen as Daredevil: The Man Without Fear.

Marvel and Netflix have been coy about “Daredevil’s” prospects for a second season, but it seems likely that the new series will once again raise Daredevil’s profile with the general public. Before diving into the 13 episodes of “Daredevil,” Origins and Evolutions has assembled a broad overview of Daredevil’s life in comics and other media.
