SuperHeroHype’s 2013 Movie Guide!

Elysium – August 9, 2013

Who’s in it? Neill Blomkamp writes and directs the film with Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga and Diego Luna starring.

What’s it about? In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Why we’re excited? We’re big fans of Blomkamp’s first film, District 9, and we’re excited to see where he goes with his sophomore effort, especially with such an all-star cast!

2 Guns – August 16, 2013

What’s it about? 2 Guns is an explosive action film that tracks two operatives from competing bureaus who are forced on the run together. But there is a big problem with their unique alliance: Neither knows that the other is an undercover federal agent.

For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down.

When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way.

Why we’re excited? The original graphic novel is a really clever and fun heist/action story. Hopefully the same can be said for the movie that has some really great actors starring.

Riddick – September 6, 2013

Who’s in it? Vin Diesel returns to the role with Karl Urban, Jordi Molla, Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff, Bokeem Woodbine, Dave Bautista, Conrad Pla, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Funk and Keri Hilson co-starring. David Twohy wrote the script and directs.

What’s it about? The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

Why we’re excited? A third Riddick movie has been a long time coming, and we’ve been waiting very patiently!

I, Frankenstein – September 13, 2013

Who’s in it? Aaron Eckhart stars as Frankenstein with Socratis Otto, Yvonne Strahovski and Miranda Otto. Stuart Beattie wrote and directed the film based on the graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux.

What’s it about? Frankenstein’s creature, Adam, has survived to present day due to a genetic quirk in his creation. Making his way to a dark, gothic metropolis, he finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.

Why we’re excited? We’re suckers for old-school monsters and Aaron Eckhart is one of our favorite actors.

Star Wars: Episodes II and III 3D – September 20/October 4, 2013

What’s it about? Really? It’s Star Wars!

Why we’re excited? Sure, people don’t care for the prequels, but how often do we get to see the films on the big screen?

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For – October 4, 2013

What’s it about? An official plot synopsis has not yet been revealed, but one of the stories being brought to the screen this time around is the titular “A Dame to Kill For,” based on Miller’s 1993 miniseries.

Why we’re excited? Because we’ve been waiting seven years for this movie and it’s finally happening.
