Many stories have discussed Steve Rogers‘ feelings of confusion waking up to a new world after decades in suspended animation. However, few Captain America comics explored how he reconciled his role as a soldier with how war changed after World War II. This idea shall form the core of a new monthly comic, set immediately after Steve Rogers’ revival in modern times.
The new series will be set shortly after Steve Rogers reenlisted, but before he joined The Avengers. The opening arc will see Captain America charged with infiltrating Latveria, which has just been taken over by Doctor Doom. While men have not changed much in the decades that he slept, war has evolved in ways that make Steve Rogers uncomfortable. Shadows and subterfuge have replaced open combat, and the villains aren’t as easy to identify. This will leave Cap wondering if he should adapt to this new way of fighting or walk his own path.
Who is the creative team behind the new Captain America comic?
The new Captain America series will be written by Eisner-nominated Daredevil writer Chip Zdarsky. He will be joined by Avengers artist Valerio Schiti. Colorist Frank D’Armata will complete the creative team.
“I’ve been a massive Captain America fan for decades,” noted Zdarsky. “I loved writing the grizzled, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight, so getting to write the actual Captain America title feels like a dream! Steve Rogers is the best of us, and I want that to come through on every page.”
“Captain America is one of my all-time favorites,” Schiti added. “Chip’s script is so clever and compelling that I’m sure readers will be dragged with us inside Steve’s heart and soul. He’s a man that became the living embodiment of truth, justice and freedom. He fought a war against Nazism, ‘died’ in that war, and came back to life to do his duty and fight again. That’s a lot of pressure. And if you do the math, he’s only in this late twenties in the era we’re exploring!”
