Matt Murdock knows better than most the difference between a battle and a war. One can lose the fight today, only to get up and win a long-term victory tomorrow. However, this has never stopped him from fighting to win in everything he does. And yet, in Daredevil #18 by Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, he must paradoxically admit defeat in order to win.

The current volume of Daredevil saw Matt Murdock reborn in a new life as a Catholic priest. Forgotten by the world at large, Father Matt became the guardian of a Hell’s Kitchen orphanage. Unfortunately, he was forced to abandon his vows to fight the demons born of his past sins. Demons which had attached themselves to his loved ones. This included his best friend, Foggy Nelson, who had become possessed by Pride and determined to destroy the orphanage.

Matt reluctantly went back into court as a lawyer in defense of his new home in a public trial. Unfortunately, the Pride demon had access to Foggy’s legal skills while posing as him. And Foggy was, as Daredevil had said more than once, the far better lawyer.

Matt quickly realized the trial had turned against him and that he had no chance of winning the case.

Daredevil defeats a pride demon by surrendering

As the court recessed for lunch, Matt approached Foggy and asked him to talk privately. Foggy good-naturedly agreed, guessing that Daredevil was going to make a defiant speech or try to exorcise him. Instead, Matt admitted he was beat and said he was going to concede the case.

This angered the Pride demon within Foggy. It fed upon the admiration of others but it needed a worthy challenge to generate true Pride. By humbling himself and denying the Pride demon a grand triumph in open court, Matt cut it off from its current source of power. This prompted the Pride demon to abandon Foggy’s body, complaining that it had no chance against someone who hated himself as much as Daredevil.
