Illyana Rasputina has lived an unusual life by any standard. Grown to young adulthood in another dimension, she is an experienced sorceress and one-time queen of Limbo. She is also a Mutant, serving as the sorceress in residence of the X-Men. This complicated history is unveiled in the opening pages of Magik #1.
Written by Ashley Allen, with art by Germán Peralta, the preview of Magik #1 offers a brief overview of Illyana Rasputina’s backstory. A dream of the life she might have lived turns sour, as Illyana stares down her personal inner demon. This sets the stage for a surprise birthday party, as a mystic terror stalks the Mutants of Alaska. Given Illyana’s generally sour disposition, however, she’d much rather face the monster.
The main cover and first six pages of Magik #1 may be viewed below.
Magik holds a special place in Marvel Universe
Most of Marvel Comics‘ heroes tend to be categorized into certain families. Street-level heroes tend to work together, as do Mutants, or wielders of the mystic arts. Magik, by contrast, is just as likely to assist Doctor Strange as she is appear in an X-Men book.

The new series will lean into that dichotomy according to Allen, who describes herself as “beyond excited” to be writing Magik on a monthly basis. “Supernatural stories featuring characters with hearts of gold are my favorite, so this series has been a dream to write! I can’t wait for readers to experience the adventure we take Magik on to slay some demons.”
Allen teases that future issues of the series may also see Illyana “maybe accept some of her own.”
Magik #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on January 8, 2025.
