Ultimates #8 Reveals Odd Twist on Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy

The early previews of Ultimates #8 revealed the issue would introduce the Guardians of the Galaxy of the new Ultimate Universe. However, the Ultimate Guardians have proven wildly different from their more familiar Earth-616 and MCU counterparts. This difference also ties into the background of one of the Ultimates’ more mysterious members.

Written by Deniz Camp, with art by Juan Frigeri, Ultimates #8 centers around the first meeting between the two teams. The Guardians of the Galaxy unexpectedly appear, as the other heroes are investigating a chronal disturbance detected by Doctor Doom. This leads to a misunderstanding and a battle between both groups.

To describe this fight as one-sided would be an understatement. The Guardians are shown to have “powers we don’t even have names for,” according to Hank Pym. Thankfully, cooler heads prevail, once the Guardians’ Captain Marvel reveals where they came from and why.

Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy are time-travelers

Rather than being space-faring heroes, the new Guardians are time-travelers from the 61st century of the Ultimate Universe. They claim to have been the protectors of an interplanetary utopia. In this, they bear more resemblance to DC ComicsLegion of Super-Heroes than the classic Guardians of the Galaxy.

Unfortunately, the future is not what it used to be, and something began to undermine their reality. They determined that a single entity, whom they dubbed the Unmaker, was responsible for this. The Guardians of the Galaxy also determined that this Unmaker was destroying their present by attacking everything in the past that gave birth to their perfect world.

Unfortunately, the Guardians of the Galaxy did not come back to the time of the Ultimates to help them. They came for America Chavez, who they claimed was one of their members and Captain Marvel’s lover. While America believed the visions of their time together which Captain Marvel shared were real, she had no memory of them after being blown through time and space during the battle with the Unmaker. For better or worse, she believed her place was now with the Ultimates and their battle was her battle, regardless of where she came from.

Ultimates #8 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
