Batman – Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns Ends With Surprising Gift Exchange

Santa Claus is perhaps the most famous gift-giver in all of fiction. Beyond milk and cookies (or the local equivalent) it is rare for him to get any reward for his deeds. However, the Justice League saw fit to give Saint Nick a worthy gift in Batman – Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #5.

Written by Jeff Parker, with art by Lukas Ketner and Michele Bandini, the miniseries pit the Justice League against an ancient evil. Known as the Silent Knight, this corrupted member of the court of Camelot threatened all reality. However, with the help of Santa Claus and his elven warrior wife, the day was won.

The finale of Batman – Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns ends with a great feast and a giving of gifts. However, the Justice League surprised Santa with an offering of their own; a Justice League Unlimited membership card. Superman and Batman agreed it was fitting, given the Silent Knight would have won if not for Santa.

While the Dark Knight allowed it might not be considered a proper present, Santa accepted it happily. This latest adventure reminded him of when he rode with the Wild Hunt and fought alongside the Norse gods. He had not set out to save the Justice League with any reward in mind, but allowed he’d be happy to help again if needed.

Why Santa Claus joining the Justice League is long overdue

The existence of Santa in the DC Universe has been confirmed by multiple comics, where he teamed with many heroes. With the magic at his command and considerable experience, he is one of the most powerful people in the DCU. Despite this, Batman – Silent Knight: Silent Knight Returns was the first story to officially recruit him for the Justice League.

While 2002’s JLA #60 showed Santa joining the Justice League, it was part of a story made up by Plastic Man. Santa was also confirmed to make a yearly trip to Apokolips to deliver a single lump of coal to Darkseid. Given that bravery, plus his recent service, Santa has certainly earned a place among the World’s Finest heroes.
