NYX #6 Brings Back a Long-Absent Mutant Hero

NYX is one of the more eclectic X-Men comics introduced following the Fall of the House of X event. The series centers around a group of young adult Mutants, who are starting new lives in Manhattan. However, the latest issue reintroduced another young Mutant who has been long-absent from the pages of Marvel Comics.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, with art by Michael Shelfer, NYX #6 finds the cast attending a Dazzler concert. However, what promises to be a fun evening is put on hold when they spot the Mutant technopath Local lurking. Sure enough, Local is shown to be in the employ of the extradimensional media mogul Mojo. Their plan is to enthrall the crowd, turning them into slaves of Mojo. To make matters worse, Mojo displays a new found ability for direct telepathic control rather than the subliminal brainwashing he employed in the past. Thankfully, when the mob turns on Kamala Khan, Laura Kinney and company, they get some unexpected help.

The action of this issue is narrated by an unseen figure, who is stunned to see Laura yet reluctant to make herself known. When things go bad, however, the mysterious observer steps in phase with the action and takes Local down. Laura quickly identifies the young woman as Kiden Nixon, her first, oldest, and best friend.

Kiden Nixon and the original NYX series explained

Running across seven issues from 2003-2005, the original NYX offered a gritty look at life in the Marvel Universe. The series centered around a group of homeless teenagers, most of them Mutants forced onto the streets after their powers manifested. Kiden Nixon, who had the power to alter the flow of time, was the original point-of-view character for the book. It was Kiden who saved Laura Kinney (then known as X-23) from a life of prostitution.

Kiden Nixon last appeared in the first issue of 2010’s X-23 #1, checking up on Laura. NYX #6 confirms that Kiden never joined the Mutants on Krakoa, leading Laura to presume she was dead. The question of where Kiden has been all this time is left open, as she and Laura leave the rest of the group behind to enjoy the concert while they catch up. It seems likely, however, that Kiden’s time in the new NYX is just beginning.
