Two-Face #1 Preview Sets Up Harvey Dent in New Role

Two-Face is one of the most unique foes of Batman. While undoubtedly a criminal, he does have some sense of honor despite his obsessions with chance and duality. While Harvey Dent cannot always reign in his dark half, he has aided the Dark Knight in the past. However, the preview pages of Harvey’s first solo series find him taking on a new yet familiar role to bring justice to the villains of Gotham City.

Written by Christian Ward, with art by Fábio Veras, Two-Face #1 opens with a quick recap of the villain’s origins. Harvey Dent was an idealistic attorney before acid scarred his face and awakened a vengeful second persona. Harvey terrorized the city he once served, yet stepped in more than once to protect it.

Whatever else has changed, Harvey still believes in justice. To that end, he takes on an experimental role in a literal criminal court. American justice is based on trials by a jury of one’s peers, so who better to judge another criminal’s excesses than other criminals? And who better to act as the devil’s advocate than someone like Two-Face, who knows both sides of the law so well?

New Two-Face series presents new challenge for Harvey Dent

The first issue of Two-Face finds Harvey running defense, acting as attorney to the serial killer Victor Zsasz. A local gangster, Jimmy the Thin, accuses Zsasz of killing his brother and takes him to the court of Judge Reaper seeking a different kind of mob justice. Zsasz swears he is innocent and Harvey believes him, because the psychotic Zsasz has never been shy about confessing to the killings he carried out. This leaves Harvey playing Perry Mason, fighting to uncover the real killer as he argues his client’s relative innocence.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be, or prouder, to be writing Two-Face’s very first solo series,” notes Ward. “In our series, Harvey is trying to use his criminology skills to resolve the conflicts of Gotham’s weird and dangerous criminal underground . . . all the while he has his eye on a return to civilized society and perhaps reconciling with his old friend, Bruce Wayne.”

Two-Face #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on December 4, 2024.
