Red Sonja, Vampirella, & More Return in New Savage Tales Anthology

Dynamite Entertainment built its name on pulp heroes; the publisher has revived many classic characters, like Vampirella, Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris, and John Carter for the world of comics. These heroes will headline a new winter special, which will similarly revive the classic Savage Tales anthology series.

Fan-favorite writer and pulp fiction aficionado David Avallone will write three original stories for the premiere Savage Tales special. The stories will feature beloved favorites well-known to Dynamite Comics readers, as well as some rare treats. The special will also reprint a Red Sonja story by Kurt Busiek and Benjamin Dewey, originally seen in Red Sonja: Black, White, Red

Savage Tales promises pure pulp action

Avallone has an impressive variety of stories planned for Savage Tales: Winter 2025 Special. The first, “Mutiny on Mars,” is an untold tale of Barsoom, illustrated by Eman Casallos. The second, “His War,” features the relatively obscure Captain Gullivar Jones, and is drawn by Hamish Munro-Cook. The final story, “The Real Thing,” spotlights Vampirella and features art by Mariano Benitez-Chapo.

“This was a great opportunity for me to go back to a trio of characters I’ve always enjoyed writing,” noted Avallone. “I’ve been a fan of John and Dejah since discovering them in my early teens. Vampirella was the first comics character I ever wrote, and I’ll always have a special affection for her. Finally, Dynamite gave me a chance to imagine a new future for Gullivar Jones in previous issues of Savage Tales, and I continue that story here.”

Savage Tales: Winter 2025 Special arrives in comic shops everywhere in February 2025.
