Psylocke #1 Gives Ninja Assassin the Perfect Sidekick

The former Hand assassin called Kwannon is unused to fellowship or friends. Given her ninja training, she is accustomed to working alone and not letting anyone get too close. However, Psylocke #1 by Alyssa Wong and Vincenzo Carratù reveals that she’s accidentally acquired the perfect partner in covert crime-fighting.

The opening pages of Psylocke #1 introduce us to Kwannon and her life. While serving with the X-Men team currently led by Cyclops, she also executes personal vigilante missions to benefit the Mutant community. There are some tasks even the nominally covert X-Men can’t undertake, which are ideal for Kwannon’s training and talents.

It’s shortly after the successful completion of Kwannon’s latest mission when we are introduced to Devon Di Angelo. A gifted young hacker and engineer, Devon had been held against their will and forced to design anti-Mutant weaponry until Psylocke freed them. The grateful college student tracked her down later, offering their services as pro bono technical support.

Why Devon Di Angelo works so well with Psylocke

While initially reluctant to accept help from anyone, Psylocke was eventually won over by Devon’s persistence. She knew all too well what it was to be socially awkward and wanting to help others. Fortunately, Devon proved to be useful beyond helping Kwannon manage her finances and contacts.

Devon’s hacking skills made them an ideal mission control, scouting blueprints and security footage to help Psylocke in the field. Devon’s technology was also able to boost Kwannon’s already considerable psychic powers. This tech includes a new device, tested during the events of this issue, which increases the distance from which Kwannon can project her thoughts and read the thoughts of others. While Devon may have been annoying at first, they proved themselves the perfect sidekick for Psylocke.
