Batgirl #1 Preview Puts Cassandra Cain in the Line of Fire

To describe the relationship between Lady Shiva and Cassandra Cain as troubled would be an understatement. The former only gave birth as part of an experiment to create the perfect assassin. The latter abandoned all she was taught to become a pupil of Batman and Barbara Gordon. Nevertheless, mother and daughter must join together to survive, in DC All-In‘s new Batgirl series.

Written by Tate Brombal with art by Takeshi Miyazawa, Batgirl #1 does not waste time in establishing its story. Blunt as ever, Lady Shiva approaches Cassandra Cain directly with the news that her enemies seek to kill them both. Despite having little in the way of maternal instincts, Shiva still wishes to protect her daughter. And Cassandra, like it or not, needs her help to fend off the waves of assassins ready to come for them.

New Batgirl series explores Cassandra’s mother issues

In discussing the new Batgirl series, writer Tate Brombal spoke of his desire to truly explore Cassandra and her complicated feelings regarding her infamous mother: “Get ready for family drama, long-buried secrets coming to light, and lots of martial arts ass-kicking the way only Cass can do. Batgirl is back in her own title, and the world won’t know what hit it.”

Artist Takeshi Miyazawa was equally enthusiastic about bringing Cassandra Cain back to prominence in time for her 25th anniversary in comics: “I’m also honored to be drawing such a wonderful book as my first DC project!” Describing Batgirl as “an intriguing part of the Bat-Family,” Miyazawa also promises “twists and turns” throughout the new series.

Batgirl #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on November 6, 2024.
