No crime-fighting partnership touches Batman and Robin. Indeed, such is the reason they are collectively known as the Dynamic Duo. However, it took time for an orphaned acrobat and a jaded playboy to become two of the World’s Finest heroes. That story will play out as never before in Batman and Robin: Year One.
Scripted by Mark Waid, with art by Chris Samnee, the first issue opens with Bruce Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth discussing Dick Grayson. The Boy Wonder is eager to prove his worth, though lagging behind in the academic aspects of vigilantism. However, the Dark Knight is satisfied that his young ward is ready to enter the field, as the Bat-Signal appears in the skies over Gotham City.

Batman and Robin: Year One new take on Dynamic Duo
The story of how the Dark Knight and Boy Wonder became a team has been told and retold many times. Waid and Samnee agreed that they had to do something special with this series. To that end, the focus is more on how two troubled people become family. The fact that they wear capes and masks to fight crime is almost incidental to that.
“At its heart, this isn’t a Batman and Robin story,” explains Mark Waid. “It’s a Bruce/Dick story. It takes place only a month or two after Bruce adopted Dick. And it’s sinking in for Bruce that he has no idea how to be a father to a kid that age. He has no role model. His own father was long dead by the time he was Dick’s age. Nothing he’s ever done has prepared him for this. And Alfred, wise as he is, doesn’t have much experience here either.”
Batman and Robin: Year One #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on October 16, 2024.
