Things have been difficult for the X-Men in the months since the fall of Krakoa. Small wonder, then, that Kitty Pryde should seek a life outside of being a superhero. However, as the following preview of Exceptional X-Men #1 reveals, heroism is a hard habit to give up.
Written by Eve L. Ewing, with art by Carmen Carnero, Exceptional X-Men #1 finds Kitty Pryde back in her hometown of Chicago. She’s working as a bartender, having cut ties with her former friends and teammates. However, while she seeks normalcy, Kitty is also not the sort of person to stand idle when people are in need. This brings her to the rescue of a young Mutant, whose powers awaken after a violent altercation with a bouncer.

Exceptional X-Men to center around odd couple team
The summary of the first issue reveals that Kitty will come to mentor the new Mutant, who adopts the alias Bronze. She will be joined by two more new Mutants, Axo and Melee, and the White Queen, Emma Frost. This will be an uncomfortable arrangement, as Emma and Kitty have a long and complicated history.

The White Queen was still connected to the sinister Hellfire Club, when Kitty was first recruited into the X-Men. While Emma reformed, Kitty did not forget and was slow to forgive how the two first met. Their professional relationship has improved in recent years, but the two still agree on little beyond the need to educate the next generation of Mutants. The long-repressed conflict between the two is sure to fuel future drama, as the story of Exceptional X-Men unfolds.
