New DuckTales Comic Based on Original Cartoon Announced

Based on the classic Uncle Scrooge comics, DuckTales was the cornerstone of the 1980s Disney Afternoon lineup. The show marked Disney’s first foray into animation for the television market and was a huge hit. Now, Dynamite Entertainment is publishing a new series based on the original DuckTales cartoon.

Dynamite has already published a number of comics through their partnership with Disney. Chief among these are books based on Darkwing Duck and Gargoyles. DuckTales #1, however, marks the publisher’s first venture into the world of Duckburg.

DuckTales #1 is firmly established in the continuity of the cartoons, which is an altogether different universe than the Uncle Scrooge comics. The first issue, written by Brandon Montclare with art by Tommaso Ronda, will find Huey, Dewey, and Louie hounding Uncle Scrooge for stories of how he acquired his riches. The boys will learn, however, that the greatest treasure Scrooge has is the wisdom earned from a lifetime of adventure.

Dynamite DuckTales #1 covers revealed

The five variant covers for DuckTales #1 suggest that the Dynamite comic will be based on the original cartoon from the 1980s. The show received a reboot in 2017, which ran for three seasons and 66 episodes. While the reboot was well received, some criticized the new DuckTales for using a more modern animation style than the original. The 1987 series, conversely, largely emulated the classic designs of cartoonist Carl Barks.

The cover art adheres to the original DuckTales designs. Huey, Dewey, and Louie are clad in their familiar baseball caps and sweaters. They can only be distinguished correspondingly by the colors they favor. (Huey likes red, Dewey, conversely prefers blue, and Louie always wears green.) The Uncle Scrooge of DuckTales is also a kinder soul by comparison, more ready to show his heart of gold than his comic book counterpart.
