Cassandra Cain Batgirl Gets First Solo Series in Nearly 20 Years

Despite being the third heroine to use the Batgirl name, Cassandra Cain was the first to headline a solo series. Her history since then has been tumultuous, though her status in the Bat-Family was restored after DC Rebirth. Now, she is poised to star in another solo series.

The new series will be written by writer Tate Brombal, with art by Takeshi Miyazawa. It will find Cassandra Cain forced into an uneasy alliance with her mother, the assassin Lady Shiva. This comes about after rival assassins target both women. This leads Batgirl on a quest for truth, justice, and revenge.

“Cassandra Cain has long been my favorite Bat-Family character,” notes Brombal. “I am seriously honored to be taking on her story—in the year of her 25th anniversary, no less. Get ready for family drama, long-buried secrets coming to light, and lots of martial arts ass-kicking the way only Cass can do. Batgirl is back in her own title, and the world won’t know what hit it.”

“I’m so excited to be exploring the story of Cassandra Cain with Tate,” enthused Miyazawa. “She’s an intriguing part of the Bat-Family and I can’t wait to see all the twists and turns. I’m also honored to be drawing such a wonderful book as my first DC project!”

Cassandra Cain’s use of the Batgirl name in the new series is noteworthy, In recent years, the title has been shared between her, Barbara Gordon, and Stephanie Brown. This followed the New 52 reboot, which erased all the Batgirls except Barbara Gordon from the main timeline.

Before that, Cassandra was ill-served by a storyline that ignored her history and turned her into a villain. Even after she was restored to the Bat-Family, she was given other codenames, such as Black Bat and Orphan. Beyond coinciding with the 25th anniversary of her first appearance, the new series seems to affirm that DC Comics has finally recognized Cassandra Cain as a worthy Batgirl.
