NYX #1 Preview Establishes New Status Quo For Ms. Marvel

The original NYX was a divisive series, detailing the harsh lives of homeless teenage Mutants in Manhattan. It is mostly remembered today for introducing X-23, aka Laura Kinney, into Marvel Comics. The title has been revived as part of the From the Ashes initiative, with Laura (now Wolverine) joining Ms. Marvel in a new kind of X-Men comic.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, with art by Francesco Mortarino, the new NYX will center around five teenage Mutants in New York City. The advance preview focuses on Kamala Khan, as she rushes to her first day of class as part of a dual-credit Mutant Studies program. In her haste, she literally runs into another Mutant; Sophie Cuckoo of the Stepford Cuckoos.

The main cover and first five pages of NYX #1 may be viewed below.

Why NYX promises new challenges for Ms. Marvel

Recent events in Marvel Comics pushed Kamala Khan to the breaking point. Possessing both Inhuman and Mutant genes, Ms. Marvel is something out an outsider in both communities. Furthermore, Kamala must balance classes, friends, and family with superheroics. While no longer a wanted fugitive, Kamala still has a lot on her plate, and relatively few friends. NYX seems ready to change that, but with those new friends come new challenges.

Jackson Lanzing spoke of these challenges in an interview with Polygon. “The cool thing about teen superhero books,” Lanzing notes, “is that [characters] tend not to come together over a big threat. They tend to instead be a lot closer to hang out or friendship books. They tend to be a little bit closer to a teen drama, than they do to a big action extravaganza.”

However, while the characters will initially bond over academics, Lanzing notes there will be action aplenty in the new NYX. Upcoming issues will find Laura Kinney appointing herself the new dark avenger of the New York underworld. There will also be a new villain called the Krakoan, who represents a threat to the continuation of Krakoan-style Mutant community in the post-Krakoan world.

NYX #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on July 24, 2024.
