DC Goes Medieval in Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #1 Preview

The original Dark Knights of Steel was a critical and commercial success. Accordingly, a sequel was inevitable. It has arrived in the form of a new Elseworlds miniseries called Allwinter.

Based on a story by Tom Taylor, Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter marks the DC Comics debut of writer Jay Kristoff. While new to DC, Kristoff is no stranger to fantastic realms and fell sorcery. He is a New York Times bestselling author, internationally known for his work on Empire of the Vampire and The Aurora Cycle with Annie Kaufman.

Kristoff is joined on Allwinter by artist Tirso. Recently signed to an exclusive contract with DC Comics, Tirso’s distinctive style perfectly captures the stark reality of Kristoff’s prose. Together, they explore a particularly unpleasant corner of the world of Dark Knights of Steel. Rather than the high fantasy of the original series, Allwinter is set in a markedly harsher world of eternal cold and never-ending battles.

Allwinter puts sword and sorcery spin on Deathstroke

The action of Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter centers around this world’s version of Deathstroke. As on Earth-Prime, Slade Wilson is a soldier of fortune. Here, however, he is presented as kin to Conan the Barbarian or The Witcher, rather than the familiar Teen Titans villain. However, the mercenary unexpectedly finds himself cast in the role of hero when he is entrusted with protecting a child. This alters the old soldier’s destiny, as he is charged with confronting the evil that threatens the world.

“Dark Knights of Steel was one of my favorite reads,” notes Tirso. “Working as a team with Jay, in this universe, has been one of my best professional experiences so far. As a creator, it’s always both fun and challenging to play outside mainstream canon. The freedom that DC has given me and my teammates has made this trip really special.”

Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on July 17, 2024.
