DC Pride 2024 Reveals New Gods Love Holidays

Much has been written about the power of love. Most hold it in high regard, but none higher than the good New Gods of New Genesis. One story in DC Pride 2024 highlights the importance of love, during a most unlikely team-up.

“The Rivers and the Lakes That You’re Used To” by Ngozi Ukazu focuses upon the Jackson Hyde Aquaman. The son of Black Manta and a woman of the undersea city of Xebel, Jackson has always felt out of place. This is partly due to his mixed heritage as a child of the surface world and an undersea kingdom.

Other factors include the long feud between Atlantis and Xebel, and his father’s sinister reputation among all the sea-dwelling societies. The fact that he’s openly gay is almost an afterthought, but is also a factor in his insecurity. Jackson’s soul-searching is put on hold, however, as he investigates a strange sea creature, who pulls him into the realm of the New Gods. This leads to an encounter with Orion, who is also investigating the strange creatures.

The New Gods Have Many Festivals Celebrating Love

Orion explains that something has been agitating the Celestial Sea, setting these creatures to leaping between dimensions. He further adds that he has been monitoring their movements, as they represent a threat to the security of New Genesis. When Jackson notes the other good New Gods seem unconcerned, Orion explains they are all occupied with a love festival. Such is their belief in love’s importance, they celebrate it multiple times a year, much to the dour Orion’s annoyance.

Jackson and Orion form an odd friendship, despite their differences. Both understand what it is like to be judged because of the crimes of your father. They also share a deep determination to prove themselves, despite their discomfort in their adoptive homes. However, while Orion respects the beliefs of his fellow New Gods, he claims to feel no love but the love of battle. This leads Jackson to speculate on whether Orion is aromantic, asexual or “battlesexual”, but he ultimately (and wisely) decides to mind his own business.
