X-Factor’s Mark Russell Returns With Superhero Spoof Comedy My Bad

Mark Russell is one of the hottest writers in American comics. He has written for all the big publishers, and was recently announced as the new writer on X-Factor. However, May 2024 will see him returning to the superhero spoofs that first made his name, as Ahoy Comics releases a new volume of My Bad.

My Bad is the brainchild of Mark Russell, co-author Bryce Ingman, and artist Peter Krause. The world of My Bad is somewhere between our Earth and the four-color insanity of the Silver Age. The series satirizes both modern life and comics by exploring the practicalities of life in a world with superheroes. Most of the villains are ineffectual trolls like Emperor King, who has the amazing power of being rich. Yet there are also truly ludicrous characters like Amazing Adams, a time-displaced John Adams who developed superhuman strength and a hatred of shirts.

My Bad is a Satiric Masterpiece for Mark Russell

The third volume of My Bad, Escape From Peculiar Island, finds Batman stand-in The Chandelier dealing with the IRS. Unfortunately, even with his secret identity revealed to the world, they do not agree on his definition of “business expense”. This results in a new humiliation for the put-upon paladin, as he makes an ill-advised bargain to license his image to pay off his debts.

This first issue also reveals a new Mark Russell creation, Captain Ohio, who works to protect the Rust Belt from Nazis. This is a more difficult task than one would expect in Modern America. (Any resemblance Captain America is completely intentional and protected by American parody laws.)
