Medusa Becomes a Hero in New Dark Horse Graphic Novel

Dark Horse Books has announced Medusa — a new graphic novel that reimagines the eponymous mythological figure as a hero.

Per Dark Horse, Medusa comes from writer/artist Tony Parker, colorist Tamra Bonvillain, and letterer Taylor Esposito. The 88-page graphic novel arrives in bookstores on Tuesday, October 22 — and in comic shops on Wednesday, October 23.

What is Dark Horse’s Medusa about?

An official synopsis for Medusa reads as follows: “Everything you know about Medusa is a lie. Forever cursed to be remembered as a monster, this ageless yet very mortal hero has spent millennia saving humanity from the horrors of legend. But now, in Scotland, she has met a foe that makes even the gods hide in fear. Armed with unwavering resolve, will the mighty Medusa be able to save mankind one last time?”

In Greek mythology, Medusa is one of the Gorgons — a trio of sisters with the ability to turn onlookers to stone. She was famously beheaded by the hero Perseus, who wielded her head in order to use power against his own enemies. Medusa is easily identifiable by her hair, which is often depicted as being made of snakes.

Over the years, numerous books, films, television shows, and video games have depicted or otherwise riffed on Medusa. In fact, The Flash alum Jessica Parker Kennedy very recently played the character in Disney+’s live-action series adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Medusa goes on sale in October 2024 from Dark Horse Books.
