One might expect Valentine’s Day to be a happy day for Wonder Woman. Despite being a warrior, Diana is strongly defined by her belief in love as a force for good. Indeed, during the Blackest Night event, she was chosen to join the love-empowered Star Sapphires. However, a new story reveals that the Amazon Princess truly loathes February 14.
Wonder Woman’s history of hating Valentine’s Day unfolds in “Say Yes To The Mess” by Brendan Hay and ML Sanapo. The story is part of DC’s 2023 Valentine’s Day anthology How to Lose a Guy Gardner in 10 Days. The comic recalls how originally Diana was confused by the holiday, fearing it was a sign of Eros running amok. Later, she found it charming, but the shine wore off as she became more established in Man’s World.
Valentine’s Day Inspires Wonder Woman’s Worst Fans
In more recent years, Wonder Woman spent Valentine’s Day dealing with a variety of romance-seekers. These include supervillains like Poison Ivy and Doctor Psycho. However, there are also regular criminals who stage elaborate crimes to set up a chance to ask Diana out. Even ordinary people risk their lives and endanger others to get her attention and win her affection.
One prime example of this involves a fan who read about Wonder Woman’s favorite romantic movie in an interview. This inspires him to dress like Lloyd Dobler from Say Anything and set up a giant mobile sound system. Diana (and half the city) are woken up by his blasting Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” in imitation of the film.
By Diana’s estimate, she has roughly “sixty dates with the world’s most romantically deranged” every year on Valentine’s Day. Rather than finding it flattering, the extra amorous attention is an annoyance that distracts her from real crises. She is also perplexed, modestly wondering, “Why does everyone want my companionship?”
DC’s How To Lose A Guy Gardner In 10 Days is now available at comic shops everywhere.
