A Haunted Girl: Star Wars Writer Tackles Mental Health in YA Horror Graphic Novel

Later this year, Image Comics‘ horror limited series A Haunted Girl finds new life as a young-adult graphic novel.

A Haunted Girl hails from the father-daughter writing duo of Ethan Sacks (Star Wars: Bounty Hunters) and Naomi Sacks alongside artist Marco Lorenzana (Incredible Hulk). Printed in 6×9 paperback format, the new graphic novel edition arrives in bookstores on Tuesday, May 21 — and in comic shops on Wednesday, May 22.

In addition to collecting all four issues of the original comic series, the book includes “an AFSP guide to suicide prevention resources, as well as a guide from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) on free therapy access options.” According to Image, “Both organizations contributed sensitivity reading to ensure the depictions of mental health were authentic.”

What is A Haunted Girl about?

A Haunted Girl originally launched this past October, with the third and most recent issue arriving in December. The fourth and final issue hits comic shops on Wednesday, February 21 — three months before the newly-announced graphic novel edition.

“In A Haunted Girl, readers meet Cleo, a 16-year-old adopted Japanese-American whose anxiety and depression drives her to suicidal thoughts, is fresh out of the hospital and trying unsuccessfully to reintegrate back into her old life,” an official synopsis reads. “What she doesn’t know is that her real struggles are just beginning as she finds herself encountering an increasingly terrifying succession of ghosts. Is she losing her grip on reality … or is the explanation much, much worse? A Haunted Girl channels terrors — both otherworldly and real-life — that come with anxiety and depression.”

A Haunted Girl goes on sale in May 2024 from Image Comics.
