Marvel Comics has revealed artist Mark Brooks’ variant cover for the debut issue of its new Ultimate X-Men series.
Written and illustrated by Peach Momoko, Ultimate X-Men launches early this coming March as part of Marvel‘s new Ultimate Universe. The series centers on Hisako Ichiki/Armor — a longtime member of the X-Men in the main Marvel Universe — and Maystorm — a new, Storm-inspired character Momoko originally created for the New Champions Variant Cover program. Brooks’ cover for issue #1 finds these two heroes ready to usher in a new mutant era.

What to expect from Peach Momoko’s Ultimate X-Men
An official synopsis for Ultimate X-Men #1 reads as follows: “Hisako Ichiki is a teenage girl who just wants to live a normal life — go to school, hang out with her friends, ignore the political strife broiling over after the events of ULTIMATE INVASION — but life has other plans for her. In Japan, urban legends have sprung to life and brought some unusual new powers with them … Meet Armor, Maystorm and a group of new Ultimate X-Men the likes of which you’ve never seen before!”
“At first, I was worried about being chosen for such an important project, but the more I draw and write the series, the more confident I am with my own vision of ULTIMATE X-MEN,” Momoko recently told AiPT Comics. “ULTIMATE X-MEN isn’t directly influenced by classic X-Men stories. I like to believe C.B. [Cebulski] and Jonathan Hickman chose me because they wanted something completely new and different.”
Momoko’s Ultimate X-Men is the third of three ongoing series Marvel announced as part of the first wave of its new Ultimate Universe. Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto’s Ultimate Spider-Man kicked things off earlier this month. Bryan Hill and Stefano Caselli’s Ultimate Black Panther follows suit in March. Marvel will announce more titles to debut after Ultimate X-Men launches in March.
Interestingly, the iconic mutant Storm — whom Maystorm is based on — will play a major role in Ultimate Black Panther. It remains to be seen if and when the two characters will cross paths on Earth-6160.
Ultimate X-Men #1 goes on sale Wednesday, March 6 from Marvel Comics. The issue features a main cover by Peach Momoko.
