Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Returns to Dark Horse for a New 6-Issue Series

Dark Horse‘s comic book prequel to The Legend of Vox Machina is returning for a fourth installment.

Per Dark Horse Comics, Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins IV launches late this coming May from writer Jody Houser, artist Noah Hayes, colorist Diana Sousa, and letterer Ariana Maher. The six-issue limited series is created in consultation with Matthew Mercer and his Critical Role castmates.

What is Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins IV about?

An official synopsis for the new series reads as follows: “Vox Machina is tasked to investigate the whereabouts of Sir Fince after his disappearance, and after some poking and prodding, clues lead the team to a mysterious basement. What dark surprises await our heroes in the bowels of his homestead?”

“I’m excited to head back to Exandria and continue the adventure alongside Vox Machina,” Houser said. “The stakes have never been higher, so we’ll see if splitting the party was a good idea…”

What is The Legend of Vox Machina?

The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated fantasy series that premiered on Prime Video in 2022 and currently has two seasons under its belt. The show is based on the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons actual play series Critical Role. Said campaign ran across 115 episodes from 2015 to 2017.

Dark Horse’s Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins launched as a digital six-issue limited series in 2017, acting as a prequel to Mercer and company’s original campaign. A second six-issue series launched in print in 2019. A third followed suit in 2021. The upcoming fourth volume will be the first to debut following the release of Prime Video’s animated series.
