Is Dynamite Entertainment’s ThunderCats a reboot?

ThunderCats fans are likely to wonder where the new comic is set in relation to the original cartoon canon. While not described as a reboot, the summaries of the early issues’ storyline describe a fresh start for the beloved franchise. Editor Nate Cosby affirmed this, stating that “These are the ThunderCats you know, but the story’s not going where you expect.”

The series will open with the last survivors of the planet Thundera fleeing their dying home world. Attacked by the Mutants of Plun-Darr, the feline Thundarians, are stranded on the distant world of Third Earth. Led by the inexperienced Lion-O, Cheetara, Tygra, Panthro, WilyKit and WilyKat will have to make new alliances in order to survive. They must also contend with a new threat, in the form of the ancient sorcerer Mumm-Ra.

The second issue will raise the stakes, with Lion-O discovering evidence of more Thundarians having made their way to Third Earth. At the same time, the Mutants will make their first contact with Mumm-Ra. This will lead to a dark alliance against the ThunderCats.

ThunderCats #2 will arrive in comic shops everywhere on March 13, 2024.
