Night Thrasher: Marvel’s Skateboarding Superhero Returns in New Solo Series

The 1990s Marvel superhero Night Thrasher is getting a new four-issue limited series from writer J. Holtham and artist Nelson Dániel.

Marvel Comics‘ new Night Thrasher title is due to launch in February 2024. Series writer Holtham — who is known for his work on Marvel television shows like Cloak & Dagger and Jessica Jones — announced the book on today’s episode of the This Week in Marvel podcast. According to Marvel itself, Night Thrasher will “adopt a brand-new look, rekindle his relationship with Silhouette, and clash with an all-new archenemy” in the upcoming series.

An official synopsis for Night Thrasher #1 reads as follows: “It’s time to thrash the night! The death of a loved one draws Dwayne Taylor back to New York City, though his days as Night Thrasher are long over. But Dwayne finds the past difficult to outrun when Silhouette, his ex-teammate from the New Warriors, seeks his help against a new criminal called the O.G. And the mystery of the O.G.’s true identity and what’s to come will change Night Thrasher’s legacy forever!”

“Obviously, there’s a ton of nineties nostalgia floating around,” Holtham said on This Week in Marvel. “It feels like a dude on a skateboard is always going to be cool and fun. I’m from the nineties and I have aged and there’s a lot in this that is about, ‘What’s your legacy? What have you left behind?,’ especially because we haven’t seen him for a while. He had to go on a journey of self-discovery and hung out [in] other places for a while to process that ‘I was dead then I wasn’t dead.’ And then, ‘What’s the world like?’ It’s mostly about him coming home to deal with the crap that he has not dealt with.”

Who is Marvel’s Night Thrasher?

Created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, Dwayne Taylor/Night Thrasher first appeared in 1989’s Mighty Thor #411. That issue also marked the debut of the New Warriors as a unit. Night Thrasher was a core member of the original New Warriors, with the superhero team’s first eponymous series running for 75 issues from 1990 to 1996. Dwayne Taylor also starred in his own Night Thrasher solo series, which ran for 21 issues from 1993 to 1995.

Night Thrasher is synonymous with his armored skateboard, which he uses as a shield, a weapon, and a means of transportation. On that note, DeFalco actually based the character on the iconic skateboarding magazine Thrasher after discovering how popular it was among teenage newsstand patrons at the time.

Night Thrasher #1 goes on sale February 14, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
