One of the most important writers in X-Men history is taking another crack at Marvel’s mutants next year. In an upcoming issue of X-Men Legends, Chris Claremont will pen a brand new story that takes place during his classic Uncanny X-Men run.
Claremont’s story picks up during the aftermath of 1988’s “Fall of the Mutants” event and before the launch of Excalibur that same year. The former storyline memorably saw several X-Men go underground after the world believed that they had been killed. Among those in hiding is Rogue, and believing Forge is responsible for her “death,” Mystique goes after the mutant inventor in search of revenge. Meanwhile, Destiny recruits an injured Nightcrawler and Kitty Pryde in order to “stop her partner from making a grave mistake.”

Joining Claremont on the issue is artist Scot Eaton, who isn’t exactly a stranger to Marvel’s X-Men books. His artwork has previously graced the pages of X-Men: Endangered Species and X-Men: Messiah Complex. Plus, the new issue’s cover features art by Alan Davis, who created Excalibur with Claremont back in ‘88.
“It’s always fun wandering back along existing pathways and especially having the opportunity to fill in a couple of nifty gaps that were initially skipped over along the way—closing off one significant story-arc and lighting the fire that ignites the series that follows,” said Claremont in a new statement. “Talk about a treat!”
X-Men Legends #12 hits comic shops sometime in February.
