Josh Williamson Teases DC’s New Aquaman Ongoing Series

It’s been several months since Kelly Sue DeConnick brought her epic Aquaman run to a close, leaving the Atlantean hero without a series of his own. But now, Arthur Curry’s revival is finally coming into focus. During a recent interview, DC writer Josh Williamson hinted that big plans are in store for a brand new Aquaman series.

Rumors about Williamson’s involvement with Aquaman actually began circulating earlier this year. However, it doesn’t sound like he’s writing the series himself. While speaking with the Word Balloon podcast (via BleedingCool), Williamson hyped up plans for the impending Aquaman revival, which might spin out of DC’s Infinite Frontier series.

“With Aquaman in particular they have really awesome plans rocking,” said Williamson. “One thing I would keep in mind is that there’s an Aquaman movie coming, another one, so obviously they have very big Aquaman plans. The stuff they have planned for Aquaman is so cool, the creative teams they have working on it, it’s just awesome and I think it’s some of the coolest stuff I’ve seen somebody do with Aquaman and Aquaman mythology and the Aquaman characters. When I see the big strategy of it, I’m like, that’s really cool. It’s a great way to do an Aquaman series. I would definitely read the Aquaman 80th Anniversary special, if you’re a big Aquaman fan. To know what’s going on you should read that special.”

Aquaman 2 doesn’t hit theaters until December 2022, so it seems unlikely that readers will have to wait that long for a new comic series. Until then, fans have the character’s aforementioned 80th anniversary special to look forward to in August. The 100-page issue features Geoff Johns, Brandon Thomas, Chuck Brown, Stephanie Phillips, Michael Moreci, Marguerite Bennett, and Dan Watters. Jeff Parker, Becky Cloonan, and Francis Manapul also contribute to the issue. DC will also release eight “decade”-themed card stock variant covers.
