Jeff Lemire and Tyler Crook Are Launching a New Black Hammer Spinoff

There’s a new superhero team coming to the Black Hammer universe. With help from artist Tyler Crook, Jeff Lemire is launching the next spinoff from his acclaimed creator-owned series. Dark Horse has just shared the first details for The Unbelievable Unteens, which debuts later this year.

It sounds like Lemire is drawing on some very personal experience for the upcoming title. The spinoff follows Jane Ito, a comic book artist whose hit series about teenage superheroes suddenly comes to life. Following a convention appearance, Jane comes face to face with a member of the Unbelievable Unteens. The meeting leads her to question her own sense of reality. And over the course of four issues, she will learn “the true nature of her identity” as well.

The Unbelievable Unteens originally appeared in Black Hammer‘s Free Comic Book Day issue in 2019. The team’s members include Jack Sabbath, Kid Boom, Snapdragon, Straka, and Strobe. Jane might be shocked to see these heroes in the flesh. Regardless, she will eventually uncover “a sinister plot leading her to assemble a team she had suspected was purely fictional.”

“The Unbelievable Unteens is a Black Hammer story that I have been working on for a few years and was just waiting for the right time and the right collaborator,” said Lemire in a new statement. “After doing Colonel Weird with Tyler Crook, I knew he would be perfect to bring the creepy and wonderful teenage superhero world of the Unteens to life. This series stands alone but will also tie back into the new Black Hammer: Reborn series in unexpected ways!”

“I loved working with Jeff Lemire on Colonel Weird: Cosmamgog and was very excited that he wanted to continue working with me on The Unbelievable Unteens,” added Crook. “I can’t wait for readers to get to know these characters and the weird events that made these Unteens so ‘unbelievable!’”

The Unbelievable Unteens #1 hits comic shops on August 11.
