Years ago, DC Comics embraced its early live-action TV shows with new comics based on Batman ’66 and Wonder Woman ’77. This summer, DC’s first two blockbuster movie franchises will also get that opportunity.
DC has announced two new digital first comic book series. The first is Batman ’89, which will be set in the same world as Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns. Screenwriter Sam Hamm, who also wrote the first Batman movie, will script the series. He will be joined by artist Joe Quinones for a story that will reintroduce Selina Kyle/Catwoman and debut a new Robin. Additionally, DC promises a new take on Harvey Dent/Two-Face “that is as close to movie magic as a comic can get!”

Writer Rob Venditti and artist Wilfredo Torres will tackle the second series, Superman ’78. This comic will be a continuation of the Richard Donner/Christopher Reeve Superman movies. However, there’s no indication from DC about which villains will be used in the story. Instead, DC promises a world where “bystanders are surprised and delighted by Superman’s abilities, and Lois Lane doesn’t (yet!) know that Clark Kent is secretly Superman.”
Superman ’78 and Batman ’89 will debut with six digital chapters on July 27. Both books will also have six new chapters released weekly. The print comics for both titles will be published between August and October. DC has also revealed that a Batman ’89 hardcover collection will arrive in October, with Superman ’78 following in November.
