It’s happening again. Nearly three decades after Marvel’s Clone Saga polarized comic fans in the mid-‘90s, the House of Ideas is getting ready to pit Miles Morales against a new legion of webslinging doppelgangers. Starting in the pages of Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25, Miles will embark on a Clone Saga all his own.
Marvel actually announced the event yesterday with a short video posted on social media. But today, Marvel shared new details about what readers can expect when the story kicks off. Miles will encounter not one, not two but three different clones, designed by artist Carmen Carnero. All of these clones were created by the Assessor, a villain who has been a thorn in Miles’ side for the last two years. The upcoming storyline coincides with the 10th anniversary of Miles’ first appearance in 2011.
Saladin Ahmed, the writer of Miles Morales: Spider-Man, also offered a few hints about the challenges Miles will face in the coming months. Apparently, the new arc will also tie up several story threads from throughout his run on the series.
“When Peter Parker faced his own Clone Saga years ago, he was taking part in what was already one of the most iconic traditions in comics – the hero battling a version of themselves,” said Ahmed. “Since the very first issue of Miles Morales: Spider-Man, I’ve known that I wanted to put Miles through that iconic wringer in his own distinctive way. Miles’ Clone Saga is a story that has been months, even years, in the making.”

“We’ve been planting its seeds throughout the series,” added Ahmed. “From the horrors of being abducted by the Assessor to the confrontations and sacrifices of the Ultimatum epic. Moments from the past will come back to haunt Miles, and the events of the story will ensnare everyone from his baby sister to Peter Parker (who knows a thing or two about dealing with clones). The ramifications will be felt for years, and it all starts in April!”
The original Clone Saga unfolded across various Spider-Man titles from 1994 to 1996. It memorably introduced the world to Peter Parker’s clone, Ben Reilly, the product of experiments conducted by Miles Warren/The Jackal years prior. Fans continue to argue about the story’s quality to this day. And according to editor Nick Lowe, the modern update will court even more debate.
“If you thought the first Clone Saga was controversial, wait until you read what Saladin and Carmen do,” said Lowe.
