Nightcrawler Leads His Own Mutant Team in Marvel’s Way of X Comic

Kurt Wagner has always been a religious character, drawing on his Catholicism in times of crisis. But several months ago, Marvel’s primary X-Men book showed him turning his attention to a mutant religion of his own making. Later this year, a new spinoff series will explore how Nightcrawler and his followers use this new creed to “confront the dark mysteries of the X-Men’s new way of life.”

Marvel has revealed the first details for Way of X, which comes from writer Si Spurrier and artist Bob Quinn. The series will put Nightcrawler in a leadership role as he commands a new mutant team that also includes Dr. Nemesis, Pixie, and Blink. As a number of Krakoa’s mutants give in to their darkest impulses and “turn to violence and death,” the new team assumes the responsibility of saving mutantkind from itself. The events of the series will factor into Reign of X, the next phase of the X-Men-related comics.

“I should probably just tell a lie for the sake of a neat elevator pitch and say that Way of X is a story about the creation of a new mutant religion,” said Spurrier. “But it’s not – not really. That’s kinda where it starts, for sure. Nightcrawler realises something’s wrong with the hearts and minds of mutantkind and sets out to fix it. But as he quickly discovers, this isn’t a job for priests and prayers. The question is, what do they have to become in order to fight it? Preachers? Cops? Executioners? Or something entirely new?”

Way of X is a smart, psychedelic tale about faith, science, culture, love and law,” added Spurrier. “And Bamfing. Bamfing just for the joy of it.”

Additionally, Quinn shared how excited he is to draw a story where the teleporting mutant plays a significant role.

“I’m incredibly excited that Marvel gave me the opportunity to launch a new X-Men series with Si,” said Quinn. “Nightcrawler is one of my favorite X-Men, and he along with the recent developments in the X-Men universe really gives us the opportunity to explore some pretty wild concepts and ideas. Bringing them to life is really a dream come true. Si is a great storyteller and this story gives X-Men fans something they’ve never seen before.”
