John Constantine Investigates the 1% in Hellblazer: Rise and Fall

For the last several months, John Constantine has been enjoying newfound success with an ongoing series set in the Sandman Universe. Now, DC’s Black Label imprint is preparing to launch a new three-issue miniseries featuring the character. The publisher has just announced that Hellblazer: Rise and Fall will debut later this year.

Constantine’s latest supernatural investigation kicks off with a billionaire falling from the sky and impaling himself on a church spire. As if the circumstances of his death weren’t already bizarre enough, he’s found with angel wings affixed to his back. Soon enough, the body count rises and John reunites with his childhood friend, Aisha Bukhari, now a detective working the case. Much to his surprise, he learns that the spate of deaths is somehow connected to his and Aisha’s past.

Rise and Fall comes from the all-star creative team of writer Tom Taylor and artist Darick Robertson. Taylor is currently writing DCeased: Hope at World’s End and is also known for his work on Marvel’s All-New Wolverine series. Robertson, on the other hand, is most famous for co-creating The Boys with Garth Ennis and Transmetropolitan with Warren Ellis.

“This is a very twisted book,” Taylor said in a statement. “But, I actually want to give people exactly the John they’ve seen before. I want to write the bloke who steps out of the shadows with the smirk, the lit cigarette and all the answers. I want a story of shocks and sadness and triumph in the face of utter horror.”

Taylor went on to explain why Constantine is the perfect character for a story that deals with class conflict.

“I love writing characters who speak truth to power,” added Taylor. “John doesn’t just speak truth to power, he tears power a new one any chance he gets. He’s also not your standard perfect hero. He makes a lot of mistakes and people in his orbit get hurt. But there’s a beautiful heart beating in the bastard…there’s something very cathartic about class warfare where the upper class doesn’t win every damn battle.”
