In 2004, Dave Sim brought his creator owned series, Cerebus, to an end after 300 issues. It was the longest running independent comic book series, and Cerebus held the record for 15 years. But next month, that record will fall with the release of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn #301.
Via CBR, Guinness World Records will honor McFarlane’s achievement later this week at New York Comic Con. On Saturday, October 5, during the “The Road to Historic SPAWN 301” panel, Guinness adjudicator Claire Elise Stephens will officially award McFarlane the new world record.
“I’m incredibly honored to be presenting this Guinness World Records title to Todd McFarlane in honor of Spawn #301 at an event that celebrates creators with such enthusiasm,” said Stephens in a statement. “Todd McFarlane displays immense passion, a key value of our mission and this achievement is a recognition of Todd’s nearly three-decade career.”

McFarlane wasn’t the only creator on Spawn for its 27 year run. He acknowledged his collaborators during his own statement about the upcoming event.
“Any record that is based on longevity, is made on the backs of dozens of people,” said McFarlane. “As much as I am proud to be receiving this award, I gratefully accept it on behalf of all those who helped me the past 27 years on this journey.”
Eric Larsen, one of McFarlane’s Image Comics co-founders, may be the next to achieve the 300 mark. Larsen’s series, Savage Dragon, is currently at 245 issues. However, the pace of Savage Dragon’s release has been sporadic in 2019.
Spawn #301 will hit comic book stores on Wednesday, October 9.
