The X-Men have carved out their own place in the world, and humanity isn’t backing down without a fight. In last week’s House of X #1, Jonathan Hickman and artist Pepe Larraz shook up the Marvel Universe. Professor Xavier united mutantkind under his banner, and grew a new island nation from Krakoa seeds. While there is some question as to whether the X-Men seen in that story are truly themselves, Krakoa is already entrenched as a super power. But the mutants may come to regret that course of action.
In next week’s Powers of X #1, Hickman and artist R. B. Silva are jumping 100 years into the future…and it’s not a pretty picture. The Sentinels are more advanced than ever, and mutants are once again their targets. Marvel’s preview pages also reveal the identity of the mashup characters. Rasputin is the female mutant with Colossus’ steel skin and Magik’s Soul Sword. Cardinal looks like Nightcrawler with the skin color of his father, Azazel. The other surviving new addition is Cylobel, a female telepath who was bred to serve humans before she joined the X-Men.
Cylobel’s origin does raise some additional questions about Rasputin and Cardinal. Are they the decedents of the X-Men? Or are they genetically modified mutant clones?
