Matt Wagner’s Grendel To Make Its Return In 2019

Eisner Award winner Matt Wagner returns to his Grendel universe in 2019 with Grendel: Devil’s Odyssey. Dark Horse Comics made the announcement today at Emerald City Comic Con.

The eight-issue series follows the cyborg Grendel and his attempts to save humanity. The story is written and illustrated by Wagner, with Brennan Wagner on colors, and lettered by Dave Lanphear. Each issue will have a variant cover illustrated by Fábio Moon (Casanova), with Matt Wagner set to provide the title’s standard covers.

The series’ official description reads: “As civilization comes to an end on Earth, the final Grendel Khan gives Grendel Prime a new directive: Find a new home for the human race. But will the deadly and relentless paladin ultimately save humanity . . . or destroy it?”

The character debuted in a short story in Comico Primer #2 in the ’80s and then landed his own noir comic series.

After resurfacing at Dark Horse Comics, Wagner debuted Grendel: War Child, a ten-issue story set in the far future. Here, the Eisner Awards winner introduced the gargantuan, body armored cyborg who is the main protagonist. Dark Horse and DC Comics in 1996  even made a crossover in which Matt Wagner’s Grendel met Batman.

Grendel: Devil’s Odyssey #1 goes on sale Wednesday, October 2, 2019. Are you excited for Grendel’s return? Let us know in the comment section below!
