Earlier this year, DC Comics abruptly canceled its superhero religious satire, Second Coming, just a few weeks before publication. However, series creators Mark Russell and artist Richard Pace have already found a new home for Second Coming. Via CBR, Ahoy Comics will publish Second Coming later this year.
Second Coming follows Jesus Christ as he returns to Earth and discovers that his teachings have been distorted. To rediscover his inner messiah, Jesus becomes roommates with humanity’s superhero savior, Sun-Man, the Last Son of Krispex. While Russell has said that the split with DC was amicable, he also that the publisher wanted some changes to the story. Fox News and a few conservative outlets gave the comic very negative reports, which may have forced Russell and Pace to reclaim it from DC. In a statement, Pace thanked DC for releasing the series.
“We want to thank DC Comics for letting us find the right home for Second Coming,” said Pace. “After all the manufactured outrage, we’re looking forward to seeing what the intended audience for this book thinks when they read the first issue this summer.”

“We understand that the publication of Second Coming will get a strong reaction and we support Mark and Richard’s satiric vision,” added Ahoy Comics Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer. “There are going to be people who don’t want to read Second Coming, and that’s fine. It’s not for everyone. But I don’t think it should be controversial to maintain that the rest of us have every right to enjoy it.”
Second Coming #1 will be released on Wednesday, July 10. Ahoy Comics also stated that the first issue will have extra content, and colorist Andy Troy is joining the creative team.
