Space Ghost and Jonny Quest were two of the most popular action cartoons produced by Hanna-Barbera, and both franchises recently found a new life in comics thanks to Dynamite Entertainment. Now, the Quest family will head into the stars and join forces with the Phantom of the Spaceways in a new Space Quest miniseries.
The new special will reunite author Joe Casey and artist Sebastián Píriz. The two worked together on the first arc of Dynamite‘s Jonny Quest comic, “Time Flies.” That partnership sparked the idea for Space Quest, which will take Jonny and his family on an out-of-this-world adventure unlike any they have had before.
Space Quest “a crossover of concepts”
The story finds the Quest clan brought in to investigate after the American government capture a mysterious spacecraft. It is unclear at first if the ship is of extraterrestrial origin or comparatively advanced Earth science. However, the situation is complicated when Space Ghost arrives on Earth and affirms the ship’s alien origins. He also confirms that his current quarry, the pilots of said spaceship, are on the loose on Earth.
In discussing Space Quest, Casey described it as a “crossover of concepts as much as it is of the characters.” He also said the basic hook of the story is something he can’t believe hasn’t been attempted before. “It was easy to look at the two concepts and see how they could fit together, how they could bounce off each other, and what kind of story would serve to honor both of them,” Casey added. “Once you see it, it’s so gloriously obvious that it just feels right.”
It should be noted that Space Quest is not the first time that Jonny Quest and Space Ghost have teamed up in a comic. The two were among many Hanna-Barbera heroes who joined forces in the 2016-2017 DC Comics’ series Future Quest. However, unlike The Herculoids (who had a cartoon crossover with Space Ghost), Jonny Quest and Space Ghost never had an animated adventure together.
Space Ghost / Jonny Quest: Space Quest #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere in March 2025.
