The show is set to make its debut on Max on Thursday, December 5, 2024. The long-awaited animated superhero series is going to kick start James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU, being the first project in its Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Creature Commandos has earned a solid 94% based on 17 reviews. Meanwhile, on Metacritic, the show holds a score of 79 based on six reviews.

Critics in the initial reviews have lauded Creature Commandos for world-building quality and focus on the most minute details. Additionally, critics are also showering the series with praise for being an enjoyable watch and its dark and daring nature.

Being the first project for the DCU, there is significant hype surrounding Creature Commandos. Previously, while having a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn revealed why the animated show was the perfect way to kickstart the universe.

He said, “Superman is the true start of everything, it’s a humongous epic. This is a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like. There are a ton of fun references to other DC stuff, a bunch of hints for things that are coming. So I think it’s just an extraordinarily fun way to start.”

Gunn additionally compared the upcoming DCU show to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, which he helmed. He stated, “I’m used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos. That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality.”

The show will debut with a two-episode premiere on December 5.
