James Gunn Reveals if Superman Trailer Has Multiple Cuts Due to Studio Pressure

James Gunn has addressed speculations on whether the Superman trailer underwent multiple cuts due to pressure from the studio. Notably, Gunn is not just the writer-director of the upcoming Superman movie but also the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran.

James Gunn says he is ‘the only studio involved’ in editing Superman’s trailer

Gunn made it clear in a post on Threads that he was “the only studio involved” in editing the trailer of Superman. This was in response to a fan who shared screenshots of social media posts claiming the trailer had several different cuts because of studio pressure and asked Gunn if there was any truth to this rumor.

“Well sort of,” Gunn began, before adding, “But when he says ‘studio’ that’s solely me, as the only studio involved in cutting or anything to do with the trailer is DC Studios i.e. me & Peter (& I’m the creatively demanding one). This is the exact same rigorous process I’ve gone through cutting every Guardians trailer, pushing the marketing folks as hard as I can, cutting & recutting until I think we have something worthy of the film itself.”

Gunn also clarified that he gave detailed and precise notes when he wanted things to change in a project. “All that said, my notes are a lot more specific than ‘make it better,'” he wrote.

Superman is one of the most highly-anticipated movies of next year, and there is already a lot of buzz about its trailer. There are reports stating that the trailer could come out in mid-December.

It’s understandable why Gunn is putting the trailer through a “rigorous” editing process. Among other things, the trailer will show the first footage of the very first cinematic entry in the DCU.

Superman is scheduled to debut in U.S. theaters on July 11, 2025. It will follow Superman / Clark Kent (David Corenswet) as he seeks to find a balance between his Kryptonian lineage and Kansas upbringing.
