There are many names for the trademark weapon of Wonder Woman. The Lasso of Hestia. Golden Perfect. The Lariat of Truth. Whatever the name, it gives Princess Diana of the Amazons the power to compel others to speak the truth. However, much like many things in the new Absolute Universe, the lasso of Absolute Wonder Woman is quite different.
Written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Hayden Sherman, Absolute Wonder Woman #2 continues detailing Diana’s first battle on Earth. After escaping from Hell, Diana revealed herself to the world while battling a horde of demons, whom she identifies as Harbingers. Diana ultimately takes the fight to the largest of them, the so-called Harbinger Prime, and unleashes her magic lasso.
Absolute Wonder Woman’s lasso is more of a weapon
This magic lasso is notably different from that of the classic Amazon princess. The most obvious difference is that it glows red rather than gold. However, it also seemes to burn whatever it wraps around. This burning is said to be a reflection of the pain Harbinger Prime has caused others. While this would not kill the demon, it would make it suffer in direct proportion to the evil it had done.
The new magic lasso is a disturbingly dark weapon, better suited to Ghost Rider than the classic Diana. It also has no obvious connection to Diana’s core virtue of Truth, save perhaps an ironic literalization of the old saying “the truth hurts.” Despite this, this lasso is ultimately a non-lethal weapon. It is also a weapon that cannot easily hurt the pure in spirit. In this, we see the core idealism of Absolute Wonder Woman reflected, despite her nature being corrupted by the Absolute Universe.
Absolute Wonder Woman #2 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
