Winter Soldier: Sebastian Stan Pitches 2 Captain America Prequel Movies

Unlike his Avengers co-stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., Winter Soldier actor Sebastian Stan shows no signs that he wants to depart the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the conclusion of The Multiverse Saga.

What prequel ideas does Sebastian Stan have for the Winter Soldier?

Stan recently made an appearance at Comic-Con Liverpool, where he answered fan questions. After being asked which prequels he would love to make if he could greenlight any prequel to any MCU movie, the actor revealed that he’d be open to doing “a prequel before Captain America: The First Avenger, so we could really like learn, maybe more about their [Bucky and Steve Rogers’] friendship. Their relationship, you know. I don’t know.”

While this prequel would have to be set before both Bucky and Steve took the Super Soldier Serum and became the Winter Soldier and Captain America, respectively, and therefore pretty light on superhero action, Stan’s other prequel idea seems far more likely to have a chance of being greenlit by Marvel Studios.

“Or we can even do a prequel to before Captain America: The Winter Soldier where we’re actually seeing what happened you know, with him. We never really explore that. We always see him towards the very end of his Winter Soldier Arc. But when he had this other double life you know, where I don’t know, he taught like [Scarlett Johansson’s] Black Widow how to be Black Widow,” he explained. “I mean it might be interesting to see, again if you guys are interested, we’ll see.”

Stan previously lamented how little of Bucky’s Winter Soldier era had been explored in the MCU back in October 2024. The actor first portrayed the sidekick in in the 2011 movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, which depicted the character’s supposed death from a moving train. However, 2014 sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier revealed Barnes had survived the fall, but was captured by HYDRA and turned into a mind-controlled super soldier assassin for the evil organization.

The character’s journey continued in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Black Panther (2018), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), which saw Barnes cured of his brainwashing and reuniting with his best friend Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) to fight Thanos and his army. The character was dusted in the closing moments of Infinity War but was resurrected in Avengers: Endgame (2019) with his story continuing in the 2021 Disney+ limited series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the upcoming 2025 movie, Thunderbolts*.
